Animation Storyboard Workshop
With veteran animation professional Andy Gaskill and Art Space 2023 Resident Artist Tiara Trent
Description
Saturday, July 26 | 11 - 2pm | The Norwalk Art Space Free and open to students 14 - 20 years of age | 15 spots Registration required through The Norwalk Art Space website Class Description: With animation becoming increasingly accessible thanks to new technologies and platforms, storytelling fundamentals remain more critical than ever. Great films begin with great stories, and this workshop focuses on just that. Local students will be provided with opportunities to explore ideas inspired by the current exhibition at The Norwalk Art Space, called Sight and Sound, and develop and create those ideas into sketches and storyboards with Andy Gaskill, who has decades of experience in animation and a passion for mentoring young artists. Andy will offer Norwalk’s next generation of creatives the chance to learn directly from a seasoned industry professional, assisted by the Art Space's past Resident Artist, Tiara Trent. A little about Andy Gaskill: Andy began his animation career at Walt Disney Studios in 1973, following his studies in sculpture, painting, and photography at the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts. As a member of Disney’s second generation of animators, he was mentored by legendary "Nine Old Men" Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. Andy’s career spans decades of work in character animation, visual development, and art direction—including The Lion King, Hercules, and Treasure Planet. He has contributed to most major Hollywood animation studios and continues to write and storyboard today. Recent credits include The Garfield Movie (2023) and the upcoming Alvin and the Chipmunks installment. He is also the creator of the hand-drawn web series "Abigail Avarice", set in a post-industrial New England coastal town—reminiscent of Norwalk—and available on Instagram at @andygaskillstories.
